Can I secure a job in Australia whilst still overseas?

Yes, you can BUT it can depend…

Whilst we have great working relationships with recruitment agencies that have very strong overseas recruitment programs, some clients occasionally insist on in-person interviews which can obviously limit your options if you're not already in Australia.

Some of our clients have offices in the UK or will fly representatives over to meet with you (if you’re lucky and they happen to be visiting). More often than not, interviews will be done via video conference so that at least you can see your potential employers and they can get a feel for who you are and what you are like. In some cases clients are happy to conduct the entire interview process remotely and may even offer you a position before you leave the UK.

Of course, being in Australia whilst you search and apply for a job here has obvious but distinct advantages. We can expedite the process and get you in front of more agencies, much faster enabling you to increase your chances of securing the right job. Nothing says ‘I’m committed’ more than actually being in Australia when you interview.

Even if it’s something you do as part of a planned holiday, it can help create a powerful first impression. In fact, we've found that candidates who are prepared to shell out and fly over to Australia for final-stage interviews with a small number of companies tend to make better decisions.

Being able to meet potential managers and team members in person, as well seeing the company culture can be invaluable. You’ll likely have the opportunity to speak to other expats and hear about their experiences which often helps you make much better career decisions.

This commitment and willingness to actually show up screams commitment and positive intentions which make you a very attractive prospect for agencies.

What happens if I get here, decide it’s not right for me and leave my job?

This doesn’t happen often but life is full of unknowns. Settling in a new job, making new friends and adjusting to a new way of life can be a daunting prospect in your own country so it’s only natural for this to feel amplified when overseas.

Should you decide that you really miss the rain and the cold so much that you leave your job having secured employee-nominated sponsorship (either a 190 or 482 visa), unfortunately, your employer or “sponsor” is obligated to inform the Department of Immigration.

U

pon receiving this information, the Department of Immigration will contact you directly to offer you a range of options for staying in Australia. Should you wish to change employers, you can simply transfer your original visa to your new employer (as long as you don't change occupations).

If for any reason, you feel like things aren’t quite what you expected or you feel you might be better working elsewhere - speak to us immediately. We are here to help, will listen to your concerns and work with you to find the best alternative.

Changing jobs doesn’t have to spell disaster and deportation.

By speaking to us, there’s every chance we can secure your employment with an agency that would be willing to take over your sponsorship BUT your application and new sponsorship must be processed within 60 days of your previous employer terminating it which is why it’s essential you speak with us ASAP.

And in case you were wondering, the remaining time available on the visa does not change with a move.
